BACKGROUND ➜
Seungyeon is thirteen the first time she ventures into online gaming, and she hasn't looked back since.
Born the first and only child to a couple well-advanced in years, Seungyeon's childhood is filled with enrichment classes and the odd playdate with some neighbour's child. Books and the television are her most stalwart companions; her imagination taking her adventuring to lands unknown. (Some years later, Pomeranian Puri joins her party as First Mascot; he leaves fur all over her clothes and keeps loneliness at bay. Seungyeon thinks it a rather fair tradeoff.)
School, when it starts, is a different experience entirely: The packed classrooms! Up to seven consecutive hours spent with the same people! Daily! Silence, which had never betrayed her before, now turns into an obstacle - classmates mistake her introversion for cold arrogance. The hobbies she grew up with are mocked mercilessly; a once-intrepid adventurer reduced to a foolish daydreamer.
By the time Seungyeon graduates on to middle school, she's learnt enough to stay comfortably within 'normal'. A bubbly persona matches her baby face perfectly, and she fills her wardrobe with brightly-coloured clothes to stand out. Anime and fantasy worlds are kept for private time only, so when the MMORPG craze hits her entire grade in school, Seungyeon does just like all the other girls do: She plays for a week, then loudly renounces the game as boring and childish; only dumb boys would go crazy over something so silly.
And every day, after completing her homework, she dedicates two hours to levelling up her Hunter character. Seungyeon plays as a boy, and it's surprisingly cathartic, to live as Not-Seungyeon for hours at a time. What she says and how she looks don't matter so much - as long as she completes those missions to perfection (and doesn't she always), Seungyeon's well-valued as a party member. (She'd never realised before, how her baby face was as much a hindrance as it was an aid.)
The gaming habit never ceases - it just becomes part of her daily schedule, killing monsters and going on quests while the pop music of the day plays from her radio. Before Seungyeon realises it- Wow, has it really been nine years? It strikes her suddenly when she logs in to Sword Art Online for the first time, randomly selected as a beta tester in a game lottery.
Welcome to Sword Art Online! As the loading credits flash past, Seungyeon shrugs off the momentary surprise, and who she is with it. She has a new legend to write.
